ften referred to as "the poor man's wood," pine has gotten a bad rap through the ages, but the soft and warm tones of the understated wood is number one in the minds of Tori and Thomas Reagan of Victoria & Thomas Trading Company, direct importers of English pine. The shop features reproductions and authentic antiques. Many of the reproductions are created using pieces of antique wood.

"Pine has a timeless, warm feeling that mixes in well with other furniture, either contemporary or traditional," says Tori. The shop also carries a selection of cherry and leather furniture and offers customers a homey atmosphere where pieces are displayed amid an inspired selection of accessories. Offerings include armoires, cupboards, hutches, chest of drawers, trunks, farm and dining tables, chairs, buffets, servers and entertainment centers. There are also some unique items like WWI ammunition baskets, hayforks, and hall trees created from vintage doors.

Tori and Tom begin their furniture safaris in Europe, where they travel several times a year to look for treasures. Often they bring a "wish list" from clients and keep an eye out for particular pieces. After finding a selection of pieces, the furniture is stripped of any paint or varnish, dipped in a solution to rid it of any pests and then given a steamed coat of wax. After transporting the furniture back to the States, Tom works some additional magic in the store's workshop, refurbishing, fixing, painting or polishing.

"I like getting people what they are in the market to get," says Tom.

Occasionally, some of the pieces carry a bit of history and have the names of their previous owners carved into them.

"It's nice when someone comes in the shop, sees a piece of furniture and says they have to have it," says Tori.

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
  1. Choose pieces that have some character. Even if it's a reproduction, if the piece has character it can stand next to authentic antiques.

  2. When looking at an unfinished piece, use your imagination and visualize the jewel that lies beneath the old paint and varnish.

  3. Authentic antique pine furniture is made of solid wood and you can't hurt it. It's strong and versatile, and can be dressed up or down.

  4. Make sure the drawers and latches work and look at the structure of the piece.

  5. To determine if a table will fit in a room, measure the table's size, and add a 2-1/2 foot perimeter around the table for chairs.

Tori and Thomas Reagan turned their passion and knowledge of European antique furniture into a flourishing business when they decided seven years ago to transform themselves from an ordinary working couple into pine furniture gurus. "We were looking for a change in our lives," says Tori.

Prior to getting into the furniture business, Tori worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Tom worked as a subcontractor. They moved to Charleston seven years ago and have been at their present location in Mt. Pleasant for five years.
